Synvisc injection uses
Sodium hyaluronate is a linear polysaccharide which is naturally present in the synovial fluid and protects and lubricates your joints. Synvisc injection is used to treat the inflammation and knee pain in osteoarthritis patients so that their joint mobility can be improved. Synvisc is used when osteoarthritis patients have already tried non-pharmacological therapies such as diet and exercise and pharmacologic therapies such as pain medications but didn’t show any improvement.
Mechanism of action:
The synovial fluid present in the knee joints protects the knee from shocks and acts as a lubricant and cushion. Presence of sodium hyaluronate gives synovial fluid the viscous and rheological properties. Loss of synovial fluid leads to osteoarthritis and knee pain. Synvisc injection functions similar to the synovial fluid due to the presence of hylans (cross linked polymers of sodium hyaluronate) as active ingredients and thereby it gives relief from the knee pain for up to six months.
How to use Synvisc injection:
Synvisc injection is a sterile, non pyrogenic and viscosupplement injection and it is injected into your knee joints by your doctor. You should not try it by yourself. The procedure is called as viscosupplementation because you are supplementing the viscous and rheological properties of Synvisc to protect and lubricate your knees. Skin disinfectants which contain quaternary ammonium salts should not be used to prepare the injection site as ammonium salts can precipitate the hylans. Any extra fluid present in the joint is removed and then Synvisc is injected only into the knee joint but not into any vein or artery or tissue. A total of three injections are given consecutively for three weeks with one injection per week and it provides relief from the knee pain for up to 6 months. The dose of Synvisc varies from patient to patient based on their medical condition and based on their response to the treatment.
Synvisc side effects:
Common side effects which may occur are rashes and bruises at the injected joint, pain, itching and swelling of the injected joint, tiredness, headache, numbness and overall body pains.
