Active ingredient: Mupirocin
Mupirocin is broad-spectrum antibiotic for topical application. Bactroban ointment possesses bacteriostatic effect (stops the bacterial growth), in higher concentrations exerts bactericidal action. The medication acts on the majority of pathogens that cause skin infections: impetigo, folliculitis, furunculosis, ecthyma, infected dermatitis, eczema, ulcers, insect bites, infected traumatic lesions of the skin, including wounds, abrasions and burns.
Bactroban ointment (mupirocin) is a broad spectrum antibiotic for local applications obtained from the fermentation of Pseudomonas fluorescens. Bactroban possesses bacteriostatic action against the majority of microorganisms that cause dermatological infections.
Bactroban reversibly and specifically binds to isoleucyl tRNA synthetase (isoleucyl-transfer RNA synthetase), which leads to suppression of protein synthesis in the bacterial cell. Bactroban ointment acts on the majority of gram-negative anaerobes. Bactroban shows no cross-resistance to other antibiotics: hloramphenicol, erythromycin, fusidic acid, gentamicin, lincomycin, methicillin, neomycin, novobiotsinom, streptomycin, tetracycline.
Bactroban ointment does not act on Corynebacterium spp., Enterobacteriaceae spp., Nonfermentative gram-negative bacillus, Micrococcus spp., as well as anaerobic bacteria.
- Bactroban ointment is approved to treat the following dermatological diseases:
- Bacterial skin lesions (impetigo, folliculitis, furunculosis, ecthyma);
- Secondary bacterial skin infections (including infected dermatitis, eczema, ulcers, traumatic injuries of the skin, including wounds, scrapes, burns, insect bites);
- Prevention of wound infection including for surgical incisions, minor abrasions, cuts, wounds.
Your doctor will likely recommend you to make some bacteriological tests before using Bactroban ointment in order to determine sensitivity of the microorganisms to this medication. The medication is not used to treat eye or mouth infections.
Mupirocin ointment is applied locally on the damaged skin area 2-3 times daily. If necessary your doctor may recommend aseptic bandage. The course of treatment is indicated individually by a health care provider. The course of treatment lasts 10 days depending on the effectiveness.
Mupirocin ointment is contraindicated in:
- Individual intolerance of mupironic, reactions of individual hypersensitivity
- Renal failure
In rate cases Bactroban ointment may cause: allergic reactions, itching, dry skin at the place of application.
Do not combine Mupirocin ointment with other topical medications including: Antibiotics Antivirals Corticosteroids NSAID's Antifungals
