Osteoarthritis treatment with Orthovisc injection
Orthovisc is an injection given at the knee joints and it is also called as hyaluronan. The active ingredient present in Orthovisc is sodium hyaluronate and it is dissolved in a sterile saline solution. Sodium hyaluronate is obtained from the combs of roosters. It is a viscous substance which is naturally present in the synovial fluid and protects and lubricates the joints. Orthovisc is used to treat the knee pain and inflammation in osteoarthritis patients and to improve their mobility at the joints. As it contains sodium hyaluronate, it works similar to synovial fluid and protects and lubricates your knee joints. Orthovisc is used in osteoarthritis patients when they do not respond to usual therapies such as physical therapy or exercise or using pain killers such as acetaminophen.
Mechanism of action:
Usually your knee is protected by synovial fluid which is present at the joints and it acts as a cushion and shock absorber. Loss of synovial fluid leads to osteoarthritis and knee pain. Orthovisc functions similar to the synovial fluid due to the presence of sodium hyaluronate as an active ingredient and thereby it gives relief from the knee pain for up to six months.
How to use Orthovisc:
It is an injection which is injected into your joints and it is performed by your doctor. You should not inject it by yourself. The procedure is called as viscosupplementation because you are supplementing the viscous properties of Orthovisc to protect and lubricate the knees. Skin disinfectants containing ammonium salts are not used to clean the injection site as they may interact with Orthovisc. Your doctor removes any extra fluid present in the joint and then Orthovisc is injected into the knee joint. A local anesthetic is used to perform the procedure. It should not be injected into any vein or artery. A series of injections are given consecutively for three to four weeks with one injection per week. The time taken to give relief from the pain varies from person to person. Few persons get relief from the pain after the first week itself. The dose of Orthovisc varies from person to person based on their medical condition and based on their response to the treatment.
Orthovisc side effects:
Common side effects which may occur are rashes and bruises at the injected joint, pain and swelling of the injected joint, headache, and overall body pains. If any of the side effects worsen or if they are bothering you a lot or if you experience any other side effects, you should immediately discuss with your doctor.
